House builders in the UK realised that they could make homes feel brighter and lighter by incorporating bay windows into the build of their home. Be it a box bay window or a Victorian bay window, the design fundamentals are the same – i.e. – the bay window pushes ‘out’ beyond the footprint of the house and opens the window up to be exposed on three sides. That means that the room has the maximum possible change of pulling as much light into the room as possible. There are 3 sides to the window where light can enter the room.

So, bearing this in mind, why do we insist on putting heavy curtains that practically cover 2 sides of the bay window? When you open back the curtains the side sections of the bay (or returns of the bay) are somewhat covered by fabric.

Split shutters is a term that refers to a design where the panels on the bottom of the window are physically separate from the upper portion. That means, that they are split, often in the middle or sometime two thirds of the way up the window. The panels on the bottom can remain closed over while the panels on the top can be opened up in the daytime to allow full light to enter the home.

This does not mean it is dark in the room. Angle the blades of the panels on the lower section to a slight angle and what this means is that people who are walking past your house cannot see through these angled slats. Privacy, but allowing light to enter into the home though the panels opened back on the top and the slats that are angled on the bottom.

You don’t require a home with period windows to make double hung split interior shutters work for you. Many homes, modern and traditional will suit this design.
